Where do these flying creatures appear? They have been reported in Raleigh, Durham, Asheville, Wilmington, and in other areas of N.C., as well as in Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, and in many other states
Eyewitness Reports of Apparent Living Pterosaurs in North Carolina
NEWS PROVIDED BY Jonathan David Whitcomb Jan 9, 2018, 3:25 p.m., MST MURRAY, Utah, Jan 9, 2018/LUAPT — Jonathan Whitcomb, author of nonfiction cryptozoology books, has suggested that flying creatures reported in Raleigh, North Carolina, over several years, may be related to what Americans in other states have reported to him over the past fourteen years. One kind he has labeled the “American Hammerhead Ropen.” Whitcomb also says that what has been seen flying over Raleigh could be similar to the “pterodactyl” reported in eastern Cuba in the mid-twentieth century: He said, “It may be related to the flying creature seen by eyewitnesses at Guantanamo Bay, at least it is more likely that than a misidentified frigatebird. My associates and I believe that these are non-extinct pterosaurs, what many persons would call ‘pterodactyls’ or ‘flying dinosaurs.’” Cynthia Lee, who has been studying to become a veterinary technician, reported to Whitcomb an apparent pterosaur that she saw on Thursday, January 4, 2018, in Raleigh. She was sure that the flying creature had no feathers, but it did have a long tail with a “diamond shaped bulb at the end of the tail.” It also had a head crest. That encounter in Raleigh early in 2018 was not the first time someone in Cynthia’s family had seen an apparent pterosaur. She told Whitcomb about a sighting many years earlier: “My mother and uncle saw one too while they were playing outside of my grandma's house when they were really little. They told grandma but she didn't believe it. I thought they were extinct . . .” Since she has seen for herself, however, Cynthia no longer believes that they are all extinct. When Whitcomb receives an eyewitness account with a description of a long tail with a structure at tail end, he considers that it was probably a ropen, possibly related to the flying creature that he and some of his associates have searched for in Papua New Guinea. When it is reported in North America and the head (including the beak and head crest) reminds the eyewitness of a hammer shape, he may call the animal an “American Hammerhead Ropen.” Although only a small fraction of the eyewitness reports have the word “hammer” when describing the head, Whitcomb believes that many of the sightings reported to him have been actual encounters with that species. A man was driving on the I-540 in Raleigh late in March of 2013, when he saw a “HUGE bird looking thing fly across the over- pass I was on, maybe 20-25 feet in front of my car and about 7 or 8 feet off the ground.” He reported the encounter on an online forum and titled his experience “OK . . . so I saw a Pterodactyl up close tonight.” He described it as “bat-like in a way . . . [with] a LONG tail with a spade at the end.” Like the sighting by Cynthia Lee, the one by this man was in or near North Raleigh. Two eyewitnesses saw a flying creature, possibly the same species seen in more recent years, in 2007 but on the south side of Raleigh. One of the two reported it to Whitcomb and said, “The tail and the head shape is what stood out the most, and the feet. That’s how come I knew it just wasn’t a bird. I thought dinosaurs . . .” A few miles northwest of Raleigh, in Durham, another eyewitness saw a “pterodactyl” in 1993 and years later reported it to Whitcomb: “huge bat like wings . . . I estimate wingspan was like 10 to 15 feet” (apparently bigger than the ones in Raleigh). In 2012, Whitcomb received an email from a man who, with his cousin, saw something bringing to his mind the word “dragon.” That encounter was in October of 2009, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The eyewitness said, “It looked like what I had seen in a Jurassic Park movie.” In 2010, another eyewitness reported, “I was driving home from dropping a friend off at school.  When I was almost home (passed the Food Lion on Commerce Rd, going towards Country Club Rd in Jacksonville, NC), I saw something HUGE above me in the sky. It looked like a pale greenish white and smooth-skinned. It didn't appear to have any feathers, and it had the tail with the diamond shape on the end.” The following map shows where sightings of apparent living pterosaurs have been reported in the United States, from a recently- published online list that was last updated on January 4, 2018. Most of these reports were sent directly to Whitcomb, by emails from the eyewitnesses, although not all of the older accounts have yet been added, as of January 9, 2018, to his list of the “more- credible” accounts.
