Amazing new words for “Amazing Grace”

Here’s the first verse:

Amazing grace! The Savior’s hand
Could save someone like me!
I once would sink but now I stand,
Was blind but now I see.

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

This hymn, in itself, is hardly new, but many LDS members had not yet sung it before it was made available on the Church site for the upcoming Hymns—for Home and Church as hymn #1001. Here is the first verse:

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing;
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace.
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.

Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount; I’m fixed upon it:
Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Christ in Gethsemane—a New Sacrament Hymn

“Now in the Garden” might be called the grownup version of “Gethsemane”

Kneels the Beloved Son,
Feeling the dark perpetual chill:
His agony has begun.

Seeking his Father’s will
Finding his pain is worse,
He makes the choice, enduring it still,
In accepting the awful curse.

A New Easter Hymn for Latter-day Saints

“Hail to the Son” has words, by Jonathan Whitcomb , set to the music of Felix Mendelssohn. Here is the first verse:

Hail to the King, the Holy Son of the Father!
Hail to the Son, the resurrected Redeemer!
Hail to the King forever more!

New LDS lyrics for “Amazing Grace”

“I was surprised to find an even more serious problem with most of the verses: At least most of them had no direct reference to Jesus Christ. It seemed to me that this neglect was similar to what we had been warned about by the prophet Russel M. Nelson: Use the Savior’s name when talking about the atonement of Christ.” {That surely also applies to the grace of the Savior.]

About the old Christian Hymn “Amazing Grace”

Amazing Grace is one of the most beloved and enduring hymns in Christian tradition. With its profound message of redemption and spiritual renewal, the hymn has touched millions of lives across centuries and cultures.

LDS Hymn “Like a River Flowing”

As of at least mid-June of 2025, “Like a River Flowing” has not been promoted or endorsed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With that said, individual local units of the Church may use their own judgement in the use of this new hymn, for it may be copied for incidental noncommercial use at church or in the home.

The year-2024 unofficial-LDS version of “Amazing Grace” has seven verses, with #5 and #7 being traditional:

Through many dangers, toils, and snares . . .

and verse seven:

When we’ve been there ten thousand years . . .

 

As of at least June 1, 2025, this version of “Amazing Grace” has not been promoted or accepted for publication by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at least not yet. Some of the lyrics, however, were chosen with that church in mind. Verse #3 is:

Amazing grace! The Savior’s hand
Could save someone like me!
I once would sink but now I stand,
Was blind but now I see.

Notice that the third verse refers directly to Jesus Christ on the first line. This is in keeping with the spirit of the message of the Prophet Russell M. Nelson, who has encouraged people around the world to mention the Savior whenever they talk about the atonement. Some verses of “Amazing Grace” were changed by Jonathan D. Whitcomb, an LDS member, to help people better remember Christ when they sing about his grace and listen to this new version of the third verse.

This is one traditional version of the old Christian hymn, with three verses. It is the one used by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at least as of June of 2025.

I wrote “Come to Christ” over a period of weeks, in the middle of 2022, culminating in version #121, with most of the text taken from (or modified from) the Book of Mormon:

Press forward, feast on the word of Christ;
Behold you shall have eternal life.
Hold to the rod: the word of God;
Behold the tree of the love of God.

We like sheep had gone astray,
to turn to wander far away.
Turn again. Turn to God.

Behold my Son, my Beloved Son:
Come unto Him for eternal life.
